Restaurant Roundup: Storm recovery update, tons of fall flavors

Sept. 19, 2019

Restaurants are still recovering from last week’s storm, and you can help.

The Rush, which was among the hardest hit businesses at Plaza 41 by a Sept. 10 tornado, needs to remove all its damaged belongings from inside the bar. The plan is to tackle it Sunday beginning at 10 a.m.

“We by no means expect help but wanted to let those of you who have been inquiring know,” The Rush wrote on its Facebook page.

“Beyond this, we still don’t know the fate of the building or The Rush but will continue to keep you posted as we know. One step at a time!”

Those who want to help will need to sign a waiver.

Inca Mexican Restaurant remains closed, although a sign out front sounds optimistic. The restaurant at 3312 S. Holly Ave. was damaged inside and outside by the tornado.

Red Robin also remains closed at The Empire Mall, and an opening date hasn’t been announced. The restaurant was the hardest-hit tenant in the mall and suffered water damage.

Taphouse 41 is set to open to reopen by Friday at the Western Mall, and neighboring All Day Cafe is aiming for Friday or Saturday.

As some restaurants try to reopen, others are closing in a sad symbol of the season.

B&G Milkyway is winding down for the year. It’s West 12th Street location will close Sunday. In the meantime, stop in for specials including half-gallon Avalanches and novelty grab bags.

Sub Zero Desserts’ last day of the year is Saturday. From 2 to 8 p.m., all treats are half-price at the shipping container shop at 501 E. 41st St.

Transition to fall flavors with the new featured treats at Caribou Coffee. There’s a maple waffle sandwich, cinnamon roll and of course, pumpkin bread.

Candy Cloud Factory is ready for fall, too, with its new Fall Spice cotton candy, available for a limited time. Fall and winter hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday and Tuesday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday. It’s closed Mondays.

Head over to Lake Lorraine for some treats from its restaurants. The SandBar & Grill has debuted Campfire Stix. They’re hand-rolled wontons, stuffed with “a magical blend of chocolate chip cookie dough” infused with marshmallows and graham crackers, deep-fried and tossed in cinnamon and sugar.

And neighboring Smallcakes Cupcakery & Creamery has created stuffed cake cookies. The bakery will be trying different flavor combinations and is starting with gluten-free chocolate chip with vanilla cake inside and regular chocolate mint chip with birthday surprise inside.

Finally, in case it’s not marked on your calendar, Friday is National Pepperoni Pizza Day. Villa Italian Kitchen at The Empire Mall is offering buy-one-get-one pepperoni slices in honor of the occasion.

Toppers Pizza is offering buy one pizza, get one free, or buy Topperstix, get Topperstix free until Wednesday.

And Pizza Hut has come up with a new pizza stuffed with Cheez-Its. It’s available for a limited time for $6.49 and includes four baked jumbo squares. The crust is infused with Cheez-It sharp cheddar flavor, and it’s stuffed with cheese or pepperoni and served with marinara dipping sauce.
