Restaurant Roundup: Succulent cupcakes, mint juleps, Red Bull Slush

May 2, 2019

Oh My Cupcakes has created a Sweet & Succulent gift box for Mother’s Day with four succulent-looking cupcakes and two succulent plants. The bad news is the 30 boxes with actual plants sold out in advance. The good news is the bakery will make gift boxes with six decorated cupcakes instead.

Cracker Barrel is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year with the introduction of Southern fried chicken. The bone-in chicken is double-breaded by hand with a seasoned coating. Orders come as a half-chicken with two sides and buttermilk biscuits or corn muffins for $10.79. Starting May 20, customers can order the fried chicken as a picnic box with 12 pieces, two sides and biscuits for $33.99.

JL Beers on Western Avenue is celebrating 31 Days of Surly. A new keg of Surly Brewing Co. beer will be tapped every day this month. Many of them are taproom-only beers and cellared kegs.

Because a sugar rush just isn’t enough, Sonic Drive-In’s newest limited-time slushes feature Red Bull. The caffeine-infused drink is used in the Red Bull Slush and the Cherry Limeade Red Bull Slush. Promotional materials even carry the warning that they’re “not recommended for children, pregnant or nursing women, and persons sensitive to caffeine.”

First Fridays are always an adventure at Parker’s Bistro. This week’s event capitalizes on the recent release of “Avengers: Endgame” and throws in other Marvel Comics characters. The restaurant is crafting special small plates and cocktails to fit the theme. Starlord features Patron, strawberry, lemon, agave and soda. There’s also a Black Widow and Black Panther.

Carpenter Bar is celebrating the 145th Run for the Roses on Saturday with mint juleps, the traditional drink of Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby. Post time is 5:50 p.m.

MacKenzie River Pizza, Grill & Pub is celebrating firefighters, nurses and teachers with discounted meals. Appreciation Week features 25 percent off for the entire table. National Firefighters Day in Saturday, nurses get a discount Monday, and teachers will be honored Tuesday.

Turks & Caicos Cabana Grille is hosting monthly Lunch+Style events for shops at The Bridges at 57th. The first one is from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday. Models will stop by tables while diners are eating and will take questions. The first 50 people in the door get gift bags. Cabana Grille offers a full lunch menu and features a Pick 2 for $10 option.
