Restaurant Roundup: Unicorn treats, new ramen dish, seasonal menu items

April 8, 2021

Oh My Cupcakes is celebrating the magic of National Unicorn Day on Friday with special treats. Both shops will have “Petunia” and “Pixie” cupcakes, “Luna” cakes, color-changing lemonade, a limited-release unicorn sprinkle blend and unicorn party kits for decorating cupcakes at home.

If you like spicy ramen, Ramen Fuji has a new dish that’s served either hot or cold. The hot tantanmen is a broth of spicy chili oil, soy sauce and sesame tahini with ground pork, ramen, fish cake, bean sprouts, corn, green onion, a soft-boiled egg and nori. The cold version has the same flavors and ingredients but there’s no broth. The restaurant at 2300 S. Minnesota Ave. recently reopened its dining room after moving to takeout-only last year because of the pandemic. Hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday through Monday.

Daily Clean Food & Drink has created a new base option for its acai bowls. Pitaya, which is also known as dragon fruit, delivers vitamin C and energy-boosting nutrients. The new Royal Blue Bowl features pitaya topped with blueberries, hemp seeds, crushed almonds and cacao nibs.

The Mitchell-based Kusina food truck is making its first appearance this spring in Sioux Falls on Saturday. The Asian food truck will be parked outside Nrdvana at 2109 W. 49th St. from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Owner Gwen Mooore said she’s hoping to be in the city every Saturday.

The featured menu for April at the Phillips Avenue Diner features potato skin dippers, the Cuban Smash sandwich, gnocchi pomodoro and the Chuckwagon, which combines brown sugar baked beans and Southern-style green beans with pulled barbecue chicken and is served with a side of cheesy cornbread. The dessert special is a strawberry shortbread sundae.

The featured drinks for April at The Breaks Coffee Roasting Co. have been created to embrace whatever type of weather the month throws at us. Fake Spring is a double shot of house espresso shaken with orange honey syrup, lemon juice and ice. That combo is strained over ice, topped off with sparkling water and garnished with rose petals and an orange peel twist. Try the Salty Dogg, a tea latte with a touch of caramel syrup and Maldon sea salt that makes it taste like cookie dough. The coffee shop at 311 E. 12th St. is open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.

Oat milk is back as an option for drinks at Scooter’s Coffee, and the regional chain says it isn’t going away this time. And if you missed it, the newest site in Sioux Falls opened last week on West 12th Street.

With the arrival of spring, frozen dog treats and cold-brew floats are back on the menu at Stensland Family Farms’ three retail stores. For every dog treat sale, $2 goes to the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society.

Special offerings of Lao dishes are back at the Black Angus Steakhouse in Canton. Owner Sam Dethleusay’s mom, Vilavone, is making a traditional entree every Sunday. The restaurant is open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. that day and reopens at 4:30 p.m. for dinner.
