April 29, 2021

Watecha Bowl has added a vegan version of its Indian taco. The soy-based meat substitute with onion, garlic and seasonings is loaded on fry bread with fresh veggies and dairy-free cheese and sour cream. They’re available at the restaurant at 2305 W. Madison St. and on the food truck, which opens Saturday in its new home base in a parking lot at 10th and Bahnson. Hours will be 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

The dining room for Oshima reopens Monday after being closed since the start of the pandemic more than a year ago. The downtown sushi restaurant has been serving takeout only since July 1. Hours will be 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. “Thank you guys for all of the love and support,” the restaurant posted on social media. “We feel so lucky and blessed in Sioux Falls. Looking forward to serving all of you face to face again in Oshima!”

Sub Zero Desserts started making edible cookie dough, and Chef Ellen Doerr, who carries its frozen products at her prepared-meal store, immediately put the treat to good use. She made a birthday cake cookie dough cheesecake. Order it by the slice online, or pick up one up at the store at 2210 W. 69th St.

Fresh Oyster Fridays return this week at downtown’s Carpenter Bar. Nosh on fresh-shucked oysters curated by Matthew Reigner, the chef at sister bar The Treasury. Serving runs from 4:30 to 8 p.m. or until they run out. Fresh Oyster Fridays will be on the final Friday of the month.

Severance Brewing Co. is throwing a party Friday to celebrate the release of a Flyover Country collaboration brew. The group coordinated the gathering of ingredients for Severance to brew The Why I’m Here Imperial Cream Ale. It features hops from local Herds to Hops, flaked grain from a Wisconsin farm, barley from Two Track Malting in Bismarck, N.D., and a Severance house strain of yeast. The party starts at 4:30 p.m. at the brewery on North Phillips Avenue, and includes a visit from the Flyover Country team, which will be selling a limited edition Sioux Falls shirt. The Bavarian/Texan food truck Boss Dogg Kitchen will be selling food.

Fernson Brewing Co. has released Seed Series No. 100. Limited-edition bottles and pints are available at Fernson Downtown. The local brewer began making beer in 2018 and along the way for practice has done small batches of “this and that — sometimes new recipes and sometimes optimizing existing recipes.” For batch No. 100, it’s a style the brewers have never made before — a Hefeweizen that “begged to be in a bottle.”

Put on a big Kentucky Derby hat and get a free drink Saturday at Blarney Stone for the big race. The downtown pub is serving traditional mint juleps and “Derby Peach” drinks. Race time is 5:50 p.m.
