Runnings opens for customers with expanded east-side store

Sept. 21, 2020

Runnings is ready for customers with an east-side store that carries the company’s full range of merchandise.

Minnesota-based Runnings acquired Campbell’s Supply Co. in January and then took over the former Kmart on East 10th Street to allow for a larger, 92,000-square-foot store.

“Runnings is a 73-year-old company, and what we’ve always committed ourselves to is when customers walk in our door we’re going to work really hard to give them a large selection of what they need for their everyday necessities,” said Dennis Jensen, director of marketing and e-commerce.

“So whether they’re looking for tools or pet supplies or animal care products or sporting goods, or they’re a fisherman or a hunter, they’re going to be able to find what they’re looking for.”

Brands include Carhart apparel and DeWalt tools.

“We definitely work hard to make the selections available for our customer, and we’re also going to give them that quality brand at a fair price,” Jensen said.

There’s a wide selection of merchandise, including men’s and women’s apparel, shoes and pet supplies.

A grocery section includes snack foods and features a large selection of vintage candy.

And a large toy section includes a big assortment of farm and outdoor-related toys.

Runnings also has transitioned the Campbell’s location at 49th Street and Western Avenue to the Runnings name and is planning a store in Madison to open next year.

Runnings is hiring for the larger location. Applicants can visit the store’s website to learn more and apply.

A grand opening is planned for Oct. 7-11, which will include special offers and giveaways, including a new truck.

There will be precautions taken related to COVID-19, Jensen said.

“We’re taking steps to make sure everyone’s safety is there and ensured, and that’s what it’s all about – celebrating but making sure everyone stays safe,” he said.

The pandemic has driven more business as people stayed at home or sought recreation outdoors, he said.

“Our store is made for folks who really like the outdoor lifestyle,” Jensen said.

“So those categories that support the outdoors – trampolines and swimming pools and lawn and garden supplies and pet supplies and fishing gear – all of that has trended up in sales, and we just love that we’re an outdoor store and people are using our items to enjoy the outdoors.”

Hours are 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. weekdays, 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.
