Scandinavian Designs is preparing to start turning the former Sioux Falls Toys R Us location into a furniture store.

The California-based retailer filed a building permit for $40,000 in remodeling at the building, which is on the campus of The Empire Mall.

Scandinavian Designs bid on the Sioux Falls property along with several other Toys R Us locations during the company’s bankruptcy process.

The company is known for modern design and quality craftsmanship, according to its website. It was founded more than 50 years ago by a native of Norway who had moved to the U.S.

The closest store to Sioux Falls is in Roseville, Minn. It appears in several online blogs and news sources as a furniture shopping alternative to IKEA.
