Sears in The Empire Mall spared from closing

Sears Holdings announced another round of store closings Friday — but The Empire Mall location in Sioux Falls wasn’t on it.
The company will close 35 Kmart stores and eight Sears stores this fall.
The final Sioux Falls Kmart closed earlier this year.
No other Sears stores in South Dakota are part of the latest reductions.
“This is part of a strategy both to address losses from unprofitable stores and to reduce the square footage of other stores because many of them are simply too big for our current needs,” CEO Eddie Lampert said in a blog post.
“We have fought hard for many years to return unprofitable stores to a competitive position and to preserve jobs and, as a result, we had to absorb corresponding losses in the process.”
