Smithfield plans $12.5 million expansion

July 11, 2018

Smithfield Foods is planning a significant expansion to its Sioux Falls pork-processing plant.

The Virginia-based company has received a building permit for a $12.5 million expansion to the Sioux Falls plant for a holding barn addition. That follows a $2 million holding barn addition permit filed in May.

Smithfield is the country’s largest pork processor and hog producer. The company is a wholly owned subsidiary of Hong Kong-based WH Group Ltd., the largest pork company in the world.

In 2005, the company announced a $100 million expansion that would have added 200 jobs in Sioux Falls, but it never materialized.
