Spotlight Apparel & Studio started earlier this year with a unique business platform for Sioux Falls.

“We wanted to give Sioux Falls something it doesn’t have yet, a place where you can get an outfit, record music and go to a party or event,” owner Amy Harris said.

Spotlight at 1116 S. Minnesota Ave. is a place for local artists to record, write and collaborate in a relaxed and professional studio. It’s a creative and enjoyable atmosphere for customers and employees, studio manager Mitch Kenyon said. The recording studio produces high-quality sound, said Kenyon, who has three years of engineering and recording experience.

“The beauty and joy of making music with people is great, and we welcome all genres of music,” Kenyon said. There is no age limit for those who want to record and beanbag chairs are provided in the studio for artists to get comfy while they write new music.

Apparel is sold in the front of the store. Spotlight carries men’s and women’s clothing, from shirts to shoes and accessories such as watches, bracelets, hats and perfumes.

“Fashion has always been a passion of mine,” sales manager Demetrius Rooks said. The clothing is a way for customers to express themselves, he said.

Spotlight also hosts public and private events. Some of the private events are wedding receptions, graduation parties and birthdays. The facility can hold up to 100 people, and the Spotlight crew will set up and tear down. The business also works with the Phoenix Lounge in Harrisburg for bigger events, and provides DJs for gatherings at other venues.

Spotlight’s public events do not serve alcohol and are open to those 18 and older.

“We try to keep it different by having amateur comedy nights, speed dating, pajama parties and spades tournaments,” Harris said.

At 10 p.m. Saturday, June 17, the studio is hosting a first-time cypher, where artists get together and freestyle rap.

Spotlight is working on getting more weekday events for the summer.
