State approves plans to connect Veterans Parkway to I-29

Sept. 22, 2020

Plans to complete the southern stretch of Veterans Parkway from 57th Street to Interstate 29 have been approved by the state.

The Transportation Commission approved the plans Tuesday, Gov. Kristi Noem and Mayor Paul TenHaken said in a news release.

“We are grateful to the governor’s office and the South Dakota Department of Transportation for making this critical investment in roadway infrastructure,” TenHaken said. “The southern expansion of Veterans Parkway has been discussed for decades, and when completed, it will be transformational for our region. This multiyear roadway expansion will not only improve traffic flow and better connect Sioux Falls to neighboring communities but also spark significant economic development along with the project.”

The work is expected to be done as four projects. Once those are completed, the city will take over responsibility for the road.

The completed section of Veterans Parkway, previously referred to as Highway 100, runs from 57th Street north to Rice Street. A section from Rice to Interstate 90 is expected to open later this year.

“As South Dakota’s economy continues to grow, it’s crucial that we finalize this major infrastructure investment in Sioux Falls,” Noem said. “The Veterans Parkway will enhance economic opportunities for the city and the surrounding area, and I’m grateful for the continued partnership between the state and the city to get this project across the finish line.”

The total estimated cost for the remaining portion of the Veterans Parkway is $208.9 million, with the state covering $176 million and $32.9 million coming from the city.

The news release did not include a time line for completion of the project. A map included as an attachment for today’s Transportation Commission meeting agenda, however, shows the last of the four remaining sections being completed in 2026.
