Stensland Family Farms opens west-side ice cream shop

June 19, 2020

Stensland Family Farms began offering its ice cream treats to the west side of Sioux Falls today.

The dairy farm and creamery near Larchwood, Iowa, has opened its third retail store in the city. The newest location is in the Roosevelt Marketplace at 41st Street and Sertoma Avenue.

It’s a shared space with Flyboy Donuts, although the doughnut and coffee shop won’t open until August.

For now, customers can find ice cream treats from Stensland’s 16-flavor dipping case, pints of ice cream and hamburger in the freezer, and milk, cheese, butter and eggs in the refrigerated case.

The growing west side is ready for more retailers, said Leah Moller, a family owner who manages retail operations and marketing.

“This specific side of town, it seems like there’s nothing over here.”

The shop is “basically a replica” of Stensland’s other retail locations, both of which are on 41st Street – “east” near Sycamore Avenue and “central” near Kiwanis Avenue.

Stensland also operates Falls Overlook Cafe at Falls Park and the concessions stand at the Midco Aquatic Center, but that likely won’t reopen until late fall, said Mark Stensland, a family owner who’s the general manager of the retail stores.

The dipping case at the new store, “west,” holds 16 flavors of ice cream, which can be served in a scoop or waffle cone or covered in toppings for a sundae or made into a float.

“There are six to eight standards and then we rotate everything else – sometimes every other week, but our seasonals usually every month or two.”

There’s seating inside for 24 customers, and Moller said they’ll likely add a few tables and chairs outside.

Summer hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday and noon to 8 p.m. Sunday.

Broker Ryan Tysdal of Van Buskirk Cos. brought the two tenants together, realizing neither one wanted that much space alone.

“It’s really perfect,” said Ben Duenwald, the owner of Flyboy Donuts, “for cost reasons and just because of their target is afternoon and our target is morning.”

Flyboy will have a drive-thru, and the location – its fourth in Sioux Falls – also will feature specialty coffee drinks. Those have proven to be popular at the third Flyboy, which opened June 1 at 57th Street and Sycamore Avenue.
