A free event April 27 offers businesses information designed to help them sell products and services to local, state and federal government agencies.

The “Selling to the Government: Getting Down to Business” event will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on April 27 at the Morningside Community Center at 2400 S. Bahnson Ave.

The open house-style gathering will bring representatives of companies together with officials from agencies that buy products and services to carry out their missions. Business attendees do not have to register in advance, and no appointments are required.

Kareen Dougherty, program manager for the South Dakota Procurement Technical Assistance Center, or PTAC, compares the gathering to a matchmaking event.

“Businesses will get a chance to talk one on one to people from state and federal agencies who can make buying decisions,” Dougherty said. “It helps business representatives identify potential markets that they might not have known existed.”

The event will be co-hosted by PTAC and the U.S. Small Business Administration office in South Dakota. Representatives of the two offices will be available to help answer questions and provide information to attendees.

Several agencies that contract for products and services are expected to be represented, said Lisa Claassen, a business opportunity specialist with the SBA. The list includes the National Park Service, Western Area Power Administration, Indian Health Services, Bureau of Indian Affairs, Native American PTAC, U.S. Geological Survey (Earth Resources Observation and Science Center), U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, State of South Dakota, South Dakota Board of Regents, City of Sioux Falls, and the Sioux Falls Housing and Redevelopment Commission.

Business representatives are welcome to bring marketing materials to leave with the agencies, Claassen said.
