Up-and-Comer helps find talent for Sanford

Feb. 27, 2018

This week’s Up-and-Comer is Kelsey Hillberg, a talent adviser at Sanford Health.

Name: Kelsey Hillberg

Age: 30

Hometown: Huron

What brought you to Sioux Falls?

Opportunity! I wanted to move to Sioux Falls from Huron after graduating from college to work in human resources. It was still close to my family, but the bigger community offered more opportunity for growth and advancement. Sioux Falls felt like the perfect fit.

What keeps you in Sioux Falls?

I love this community – it’s just the right size, not too small, not too big. Everything you need is here, and you can usually get across town in a half-hour. The schools are great, and we have access to great health care, and the community is safe. I like to tell people it’s a big city and a small town – at the same time. Plus, there’s a growing dining scene – perfect for a foodie like me.

What’s your favorite thing about your job?

I love being able to connect the right person to the right job at Sanford Health. I get to change people’s lives, offer them opportunities and grow the Sanford family.

How did you get connected to your industry?

I’ve spent most of my career in health care and nonprofits. I enjoy working in human resources. It’s rewarding and challenging to find and hire the best talent to carry out our mission and help people during their most vulnerable times. It combines my passions of helping others and working with nonprofits.

Describe Sanford Health in three words.

Innovative, dedicated, supportive.

Many businesses struggle with talent acquisition. What are some keys you have found to success?

We have low unemployment in Sioux Falls, which is great, but it does present some challenges. It’s helped a lot to be connected in the community, using available resources and business networks.

What’s one business you’d like to see in Sioux Falls that isn’t here now?

This is a hard question! Sioux Falls has so many great options for whatever I am looking for that it is hard to think about what isn’t here. I would say a Skechers store or a pro sports team.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

I still see myself working for Sanford Health, maybe in a different role within human resources. Personally? I hope to buy a home in the next few years and maybe get another puppy!
