Variety meets produce with Zandbroz’s Farm Fresh Fridays

June 13, 2019

Sioux Falls residents don’t usually expect to find fresh produce when they shop at Zandbroz Variety, but Farm Fresh Fridays, running weekly all summer, are here to change that.

The mini farmers market is held outside of Zandbroz on Phillips Avenue from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. every Friday. The produce is provided by Haroldson Farms, a certified organic farm in Bruce, which is northwest of Brookings.

Kyle Haroldson, owner of Haroldson Farms, said the event got started when his brother-in-law, who is the son of the owners of Mrs. Murphy’s Irish Gifts, reached out Jeff Danz, owner of the nearby Zandbroz and told him about the farm. Haroldson then reached out to Danz, who was delighted to have another attraction to his business.

“We just love having activity out on the sidewalk, particularly on Friday nights,” Danz said.

During the past few Fridays, Haroldson has had a limited stock of produce to sell, bringing basil, cilantro, spinach and a few more products to the market. Like many farms around the state, Haroldson said this is directly related to the unseasonably wet, cold weather the region has experienced.

“Normally, I’d be hoping for twice as many varieties of products at this time,” said Haroldson, whose farm grows over 150 varieties of produce. “It’s been cold and wet, and I think everybody is a little behind. Most of what I’ve brought so far was grown in our greenhouse.”

Earlier this month, however, Haroldson said he was able to harvest from his fields for the first time this season, adding rhubarb, beets, dill and kale to his selection. He hopes the weather continues to stay nice to increase his stock for the Zandbroz market, a farmers market in Brookings and grocery stores such as The Co-op Natural Foods, Pomegranate Market and Hy-Vee.

“It’s amazing how much things will grow when the sun comes out,” he said. “Within a few weeks, we’ll have more stuff, and by later in July and August, we’ll have all kinds of things, such as beans, peas, zucchini, summer squashes and more.”
