Whiffer’s Sandwiches reopens for 40th year

April 19, 2018

Whiffer’s Sandwiches has reopened for its 40th year with the same owner, same menu, same prices and one somewhat-new face.

Jeannie Randall is now her 84-year-old mother’s full-time assistant. That doesn’t mean, however, that Whiffer Randall is slowing down. Whiffer is still making the food, including baking cookies and brownies every morning, said Jeannie, who has worked at the North End deli on and off for 39 of its 40 years. “I was underage that first year she opened,” Jeannie said.

The desserts are still humongous, and the sandwiches are still heaped with roast beef, corned beef, ham, turkey and pastrami. A Hy-Vee baker makes the bread daily, using Whiffer’s recipes.

In recent years, Whiffer has been closing the deli for a few months in the winter, taking time to travel and play cards with friends. She jokes that she went south this year – to Active Generations.

Those friends gather with her most afternoons at a table in the restaurant’s dining room to play canasta.

And now that Jeannie is working with her, Whiffer won’t have to put down her cards to help the post-rush-hour customers.

Whiffer’s Sandwiches, 1133 N. Minnesota Ave., is open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.
