Candle company to expand from Colorado with downtown Sioux Falls location

Aug. 29, 2022

A new business coming to downtown Sioux Falls will specialize in 100 percent soy wax candles while offering customers the chance to make their own.

MatchBox Candle Co. started a few years ago in Colorado when its founders made candles and Christmas gifts for friends and family.

“Once we started making the candles, they started coming back for more,” said Jeremy Nosbush, who co-owns the business with Tyler Pate.

They started selling at area markets and online, and “got a really good local following,” he said.

They opened a storefront last year in a suburb of Colorado Springs, where they live, and then opened a second location this spring in downtown Colorado Springs.

Nosbush, a Sioux Falls native and 2016 Washington High School graduate, saw an opportunity to expand to his hometown.

“I was born and raised in South Dakota and know all about it and Phillips Avenue, of course. My family still lives there, and they’re willing to step up and help out a little with the business too.”

MatchBox Candle Co. plans to open at 124 S. Phillips Ave., the current 605 Running Co. location, which is moving to the Johnson Building downtown and will have a temporary home at 1020 S. Minnesota Ave. until that space is ready.

“We have a full line of candles,” Nosbush said. “I think right now we have about 28 scents, and we plan to bring our full eclectic collection to the store with us.”

The 100 percent soy wax candles are hand-poured in the store, so “you can see us making them, so it’s really an interactive experience,” Nosbush said. “Soy wax is more natural and safe for your home. It doesn’t have harmful chemicals going into the air and has really good scent and longevity.”

Shoppers also will be able to attend candle-making workshops in the store.

“So there will be something new and fun to do in downtown Sioux Falls, where they can come in and make their own candles … which will be fun to do,” Nosbush said.

MatchBox Candle Co. is a fitting addition to the building, which is owned by Cresten Capital Holdings, said Scott Blount of Lloyd Cos., who served as the broker for the space.

“This is exactly the kind of retail that has been so successful in downtown Sioux Falls, so we think MatchBox is going to find similar response from customers,” he said. “Their product is a great fit for a historic building, and the interactive nature of it really complements the kind of experience people are looking for when they come downtown.”

The store sells 8- and 16-ounce candles as well as wax melts in several sizes, foaming hand soap and laundry detergent.

It also makes space available for local artists to sell their work in the store.

“We’re working with local vendors currently, and we’ll be able to have a space for them to have things in our store,” Nosbush said. “That’s what we’re all about is locally made items. We’re not going to be bringing in stuff bought online. We really are going to have a very curated shop with locally made items, which will be awesome.”

They plan to turn the space around fast and hope to be open in early October. Interested artists can email [email protected].
