Kwik Trip picks site in Sioux Falls for first C-store

Jan. 6, 2022

Kwik Trip has picked a location for its first convenience store in Sioux Falls, and there will be more to come.

The Wisconsin-based, family-owned company, which will operate in South Dakota as Kwik Star, has purchased land on the northwest corner of 57th Street and Graystone Avenue, which is west of Sycamore Avenue.

Fans of Kwik Trip, which has a reputation for fresh produce and meat, Karuba coffee, Glazer doughnuts and clean bathrooms, will have to be patient, though.

“It’s proposed to be a 2023 build,” said Wade DuMond, Kwik Trip’s real estate development manager. “We start anywhere from February to the end of the year depending on how it falls in the schedule.”

Once work starts, construction typically takes about five months, he said.

DuMond started scouting locations in the area three years ago. While the southeast land will be the first in Sioux Falls, “I’m looking at all the quadrants,” he said.

Kwik Trip is buying land in Brandon, and DuMond also foresees locations in Harrisburg and Tea. The agreement to buy the Brandon land still hasn’t closed yet, so there’s no timeline for construction.

The East 57th Street store will serve as a neighborhood grocery, DuMond said.  Shoppers will find fresh meat, produce, and staple household items in addition to typical C-store merchandise such as automotive products, snacks, cigarettes, beer and other drinks.

Kwik Trip has its own dairy and bakery in Wisconsin, and it’s also known for the food it makes on-site.

Prepared foods are “one of the main things we do,” DuMond said in a November interview about the Brandon location. “We have take-home meals that are hot and ready to go. There’s a full kitchen for breakfast, lunch and dinner, with snacks, burgers, hot dogs, brats, egg rolls and pizza. It’s the normal convenience store offerings but much, much more.”

The Kwik Star in Sioux Falls also will have a single-stall car wash.

Kwik Trip opened its first store in 1965 in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, and its 800th store Dec. 30 in Holmen, near La Crosse, its headquarters. In addition to Wisconsin, it has locations in Minnesota and Iowa.
