Developing a healthy startup ecosystem is important for any community because it provides entrepreneurs, startup founders and small-business owners critical resources in the earliest stages of their businesses. It’s not always clear which startup will become the next major employer in town, but by offering resources to all of them, we can be sure we are helping the next POET, Raven or DocuTAP — now Experity — achieve its business goals.

With the Startup Sioux Falls rebrand complete, plans to move the organization to downtown Sioux Falls and other startup resources being developed in the community, Sioux Falls’ startup ecosystem is stronger than ever. 2021 is a year where the future foundation of our community’s startup ecosystem is being poured and cemented. There’s a lot of good that’s already happening this year, and there’s even more to come.

Here are several key milestones that mark the progress of the startup community.

1. Startup Sioux Falls’ new accelerator program to graduate 50 businesses.

Last year, Startup Sioux Falls implemented the CO.STARTERS curriculum as its accelerator program that helps new business owners develop their business models, understand their customer bases and get a clear path of what it will take to make their businesses a success. Thirty-five founders have completed the CO.STARTERS accelerator program across the first cohorts. With one more cohort on the horizon for 2021, we are likely to see 50 companies complete the CO.STARTERS program this year.

In the previous iteration of the Zeal Center’s accelerator program that operated until 2018, an average of five companies would participate in Zeal’s accelerator each year. The importance of bringing CO.STARTERS to Sioux Falls cannot be understated. Our accelerator program uses a best-in-class national curriculum, is taught by experienced Sioux Falls business owners and impacts 10 times more businesses than the previous iteration of the accelerator program.

2. 2021 marks record angel investment activity in Sioux Falls.

Falls Angel Fund and its related entities have now put more than $5 million to work in South Dakota, North Dakota and Minnesota companies. Falls Angel Fund II recently made its final investment, putting $150,000 to work in Fomeno. The biggest locally funded angel investment round occurred earlier this year  when Falls Angel Fund and other local investors put $3.25 million to work in Prismatic. Plans for Falls Angel Fund III are underway, and there is a separate, larger venture capital effort in development that will make even more capital available to founders in the region.

South Dakota historically has had a reputation of being a hard place for startups to raise money, but that is demonstrably no longer the case. Each year, we have several startups from neighboring states knocking on our angel fund network’s door because they have no local angel capital available to them. Falls Angel Fund recently was described as the most active angel investor in North Dakota, which has a single venture capital firm and no angel investment funds.

3. Startup Sioux Falls launches mentor network to connect founders with experienced business leaders.

Over the past several years, Mayor Paul TenHaken has led the charge to create a culture of mentorship in the city of Sioux Falls. Startup Sioux Falls recognized a need for entrepreneurial mentors last year and recruited 41 experienced business leaders to meet with and mentor new small-business owners and startup founders.

Comparatively speaking, SCORE, a nationwide network of volunteer small-business mentors, has just three active mentors in South Dakota. Startup Sioux Falls’ mentor network has mentors with expertise in accounting, capital sourcing, legal, manufacturing, marketing, product development and a host of other topics. Apply for a mentor here.

4. Falls Fintech brings world-class finance and technology startups to Sioux Falls.

Falls Fintech is an accelerator program operated by Central Payments that brings founders of developing financial technology, or fintech, startups to Sioux Falls. This program has operated a little bit under the radar because of COVID, but 15 companies have completed Falls Fintech’s startup accelerator program in the past two years. Each participating company receives $15,000 in funding from Falls Fintech and has access to a network of financial, payment and technology professionals across the globe from companies such as MasterCard and Discover. Falls Fintech is accepting applications for its fall 2021 cohort, and interested companies can apply online here.

5. Startup Sioux Falls sees record in-person and online engagement.

Startup Sioux Falls’ in-person and online engagement numbers are up across the board. Website traffic is up more than 150 percent year over year. The Startup Sioux Falls community on Facebook now has more than 7,300 members. Startup Sioux Falls also has launched an online community on LinkedIn this month, which already has more than 500 members. Startup Sioux Falls’ email list has more than 3,000 subscribers, and its content published on SiouxFalls.Business is read by thousands of readers each month.

One of the Zeal Center’s historic challenges was developing a pipeline of entrepreneurs to use its resources. Startup Sioux Falls’ online communities and communications channels provide a critical on-ramp for startup founders to leverage Startup Sioux Falls’ growing base of resources. When Startup Sioux Falls launched CO.STARTERS last year, it had no problem attracting founders to apply because it already had captured the attention of most of the community’s startup founders.

Startup Sioux Falls has held 40 in-person and online events from January to July this year. These events have included 1 Million Cups, Hey Sioux Falls, Morning Marketing Parties, Office Hours, Pitch Nights and Startup Socials. These events have had a total of 1,876 attendees. There is also a full calendar of fall events, including the annual Innovation Expo conference on Oct. 7. Upcoming Startup Sioux Falls events can be viewed here.

Wrap-up

Sioux Falls’ small business and startup community has a bright future ahead, with Startup Sioux Falls serving as the primary organization that provides education, connections and networking opportunities for new and growing businesses in the community. As Startup Sioux Falls considers its future and plans a move to downtown Sioux Falls, it also will double down on creating resources that empower founders to network, launch and grow their ventures for the betterment of themselves, their families, their community and the world around them.
