Restaurant Roundup: New featured menus, Hawaiian plate special, fall food & drink events

Sept. 29, 2022

The Attic Bar & Grill has a new Bill of Fare for fall. Choices include the balsamic pear salad with sliced pears, craisins, marinated tomatoes, candied pecans, blue cheese crumbles and a white balsamic vinaigrette. For heartier far, there’s the Beast Burger with a patty blend of elk, wild boar, bison and wagyu beef. It’s topped with smoked gouda, bacon onion jam, arugula and roasted garlic aioli and comes with a side. For an Oktoberfest flavor, try to Hunter Schnitzel, a fried pork cutlet with wild mushroom gravy and German-style potato salad. Other entrees include pan-seared salmon cakes and the Kickin’ Chicken Flatbread. The specials are available at both east and west locations.

The owners of The Attic recently opened Gruff Plates + Pours in Brandon, and it has lunch specials worth noting. They’re available from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. Here’s a look at the menu.

New featured specials are on the menu at RoundHouse Brew Pub. Choices include Buffalo dip served with tortilla chips, a pizza with boneless chicken wings and garlic parmesan sauce, a sliced ribeye steak sandwich, chicken and waffles, and a Mexican food-inspired version of Totchos.

Fred’s Franks is going Hawaiian on Friday. Instead of hot dogs, the Brandon-based food truck will be serving Hawaiian barbecue just like owner Donna Cutrer’s mom used to make when she was growing up there. Brother Billy Cutrer will be helping out with the grilling. They’ll sell traditional Hawaiian plates with a choice of chicken or kalbi, which is beef short ribs, and steamed or fried rice and potato salad. Serving starts at 11 a.m. from the Kingbird Coffee shop parking lot and will go until the food runs out, Cutrer said. As the food truck season winds down, Fred’s Franks is serving lunch Tuesdays near Henkel and Marmen Energy in the industrial park north of Interstate 90 and Thursdays at Midwest Railcar along Highway 11 just north of Corson.

Free wine tastings are back at JJ’s Wine, Spirts & Cigars. Wine Expos are from 5 to 7 p.m. on the first Tuesday of the month in The Event Room at JJ’s. The first offering in September offered more than 30 wines to sample.

The main kitchen crew at JJ’s will be on vacation next week, so the full menu won’t be available beginning Tuesday. Customers will find pizzas, dips and other light shareables, and the rest of the staff is pitching in to make a daily special. Tuesday is National Drink Vodka Day and National Taco Day, so get two fish tacos and a Tito’s Handmade Vodka American Mule for $20. Wednesday will feature crockpot chili, Thursday will be steak with cheesy potatoes and a bourbon butter dinner roll, Friday will be lasagna, and Saturday will be Colorado beef enchiladas and Spanish rice.

T-Juanita Street Food and Cheladas, which opened in June in the former Jacky’s Restaurant location on East Eighth Street, has dropped its lunch buffet. Instead, it’s offering daily lunch specials – most of them for less than $10 – and several new menu items. Choices range from  enchiladas and Tijuana burritos to Sinaloa machaca, which features rehydrated dried beef, and sopes, which are fried masa dough topped with beans, picadillo, cabbage, onion salsa, queso and crema.

A Mitchell restaurant with a national reputation for its hot dogs is going out of business. Hungry Dog was named best hot dog in South Dakota by People magazine in 2018, which led to attention from Food Network and Reader’s Digest. In 2021, it was rated as the top hot dog restaurant in the state by Google. The business also operated a hot dog stand, which made a few appearances in Sioux Falls, and expanded into a food truck this year. The final day is Saturday.

Granite City Food & Brewery is wrapping up its Oktoberfest specials, and they’ll likely be available only through the weekend. The menu features a pork schnitzel sandwich, spaetzle mac and cheese, Bavarian Reuben, jagerschnitzel, caramel apple bread pudding and Oktoberfest beer.

Look’s Marketplace kicks off its annual Barktoberfest with a toast at 1 p.m. Saturday. Fresh sausages, pretzels and, of course, Octoberfest beer will be served throughout the day. Games will include sack races, keg throwing and stein holding. This is a family-friendly event, so bring the kids and enjoy the fun.

The pumpkin patch and corn maze at Cherry Rock Farms are open. Hours are 3 to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The produce garden south of Brandon also has hayrides, s’mores, baby lambs and more. You’ll pay for the pumpkins but the other offerings are free. They’re planning to run into mid-October and later if the weather holds.

SoDak Soda, the new gourmet soda bar, has added Italian sodas to the menu. The sparkling water drinks with ice include your choice of flavored syrup and half-and-half. Add more syrups or substitute vanilla cream or coconut cream for another twist.

Driving into Sioux Falls from the west in the morning and want a Flyboy Donut? First Stop Coffee Shop, the locally owned kiosk at 12th and Ellis, has started serving them.

The Original Corn Pie, a traditional Mexican dessert, is available by the slice now at Agua Fresh in downtown Sioux Falls. Owner Lucero Rodea began selling her custard-like dish with sweet corn last year online and at farmers markets and craft shows in the area. She also had a kiosk in The Empire Mall for a few months. Rodea also will be at Rosa Parks Elementary on Friday for its neighborhood block party from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.. In addition to her corn pies, she’ll be selling iced coffee and cochinita pibil, a traditional slow-roasted pork dish from the Yucatan Pennisula in Mexico.

Wilde Prairie Winery is hosting its annual Harvest Festival from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday. In addition to wine tasting, there will be live music from Retro Rock Reunion and several food vendors, including Tacos de Gringo, The Cookie Jar Eatery, Andrea’s Bake Shop and World Life Church. Activities for kids include a petting zoo, pumpkin painting, grape stomping and more. Dogs on leashes are welcome. The vineyard is at 48052 259th St. northeast of Brandon.

Want the experience of helping with a grape harvest? Humble Hill Winery along Highway 11 north of Garretson will be picking its red grapes Friday, Saturday and possibly Sunday. Message the business on its Facebook page if you’re interested.

It’s already Taco Tuesday at Taco John’s, so that’s an easy way to celebrate National Taco Day on Tuesday, but the chain is giving away a free Beef Taco Bravo with any purchase. To get the deal, customers must be loyalty members.

Last week, we told you about the arrival of a plant-based orange chicken dish at Panda Express. Now, the restaurant chain is having a BOGO offer until Oct. 9. Buy any Beyond The Original Chicken bowl, and get any bowl for free. The offer is good on orders placed through the website and mobile app.

The fall Blizzard menu has arrived at Dairy Queen. Returning favorites include Pumpkin Pie, Oreo Hot Cocoa and Very Cherry Chip. New offerings are Cinnamon Roll Centers, Snickers Brownie and Reese’s Take 5. There’s also a new Caramel Mocha Chip shake and the Heath Caramel Brownie Cupfection.

The traveling food truck On the Hook Fish & Chips will be in Sioux Falls. Find it from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday in the usual spot at Tractor Supply Co. on North Cliff Avenue.
